Oregon IFTA, IRP, and Fuel-Use Tax Guide (2026)

Oregon is one of the few states that layers additional road-use taxes on top of IFTA. If your fleet is based in or runs through Oregon, you need to handle both IFTA and Oregon Weight-Mile Tax without doubling your workload. This guide covers the essentials.

Does Oregon Participate in IFTA?

Yes. Oregon is an IFTA member jurisdiction. If Oregon is your base state, you file quarterly IFTA returns with the Oregon Department of Transportation, Commerce and Compliance Division, reporting fuel use in all participating U.S. states and Canadian provinces. Official guidance is available from the Oregon Department of Transportation, Commerce and Compliance Division.

Who Must Register for IFTA in Oregon?

You generally must register for IFTA in Oregon if you operate a qualified motor vehicle that:

  • Has two axles and a gross vehicle weight over 26,000 lbs, or
  • Has three or more axles regardless of weight, and
  • Travels in more than one IFTA member jurisdiction

The Oregon Department of Transportation, Commerce and Compliance Division provides detailed criteria and registration instructions. Once registered, you receive an IFTA license and decals for each qualified vehicle.

Oregon IFTA Reporting Periods and Due Dates

Oregon follows the standard IFTA quarterly calendar:

  • Q1: January – March → due April 30
  • Q2: April – June → due July 31
  • Q3: July – September → due October 31
  • Q4: October – December → due January 31

If a due date falls on a weekend or legal holiday, your return is typically due the next business day. For the full schedule, see IFTA Reporting Periods and Due Dates.

Oregon Taxes Beyond IFTA

Even fully IFTA-compliant fleets must file separate returns for Oregon-specific road-use programs:

  • Oregon Weight-Mile Tax

These programs have their own thresholds, taxable-mileage definitions, and filing schedules. iFuelTax manages them in the same workflow as IFTA — see our Highway-Use & Weight-Distance Tax Software.

How to File Oregon IFTA Returns Online

Oregon carriers can file IFTA returns electronically through the Oregon Department of Transportation, Commerce and Compliance Division's online systems. When you use iFuelTax, you can:

  • Generate a report that matches Oregon's required fields
  • Use that report as the basis for your online filing
  • Keep a copy of the return and supporting records in one place

This reduces the risk of data-entry errors when moving between systems.
