New Mexico IFTA, IRP, and Fuel-Use Tax Guide (2026)

New Mexico is one of the few states that layers additional road-use taxes on top of IFTA. If your fleet is based in or runs through New Mexico, you need to handle both IFTA and New Mexico Weight Distance Tax without doubling your workload. This guide covers the essentials.

Does New Mexico Participate in IFTA?

Yes. New Mexico is an IFTA member jurisdiction. If New Mexico is your base state, you file quarterly IFTA returns with the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department, Motor Vehicle Division, reporting fuel use in all participating U.S. states and Canadian provinces. Official guidance is available from the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department, Motor Vehicle Division.

Who Must Register for IFTA in New Mexico?

You generally must register for IFTA in New Mexico if you operate a qualified motor vehicle that:

  • Has two axles and a gross vehicle weight over 26,000 lbs, or
  • Has three or more axles regardless of weight, and
  • Travels in more than one IFTA member jurisdiction

The New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department, Motor Vehicle Division provides detailed criteria and registration instructions. Once registered, you receive an IFTA license and decals for each qualified vehicle.

New Mexico IFTA Reporting Periods and Due Dates

New Mexico follows the standard IFTA quarterly calendar:

  • Q1: January – March → due April 30
  • Q2: April – June → due July 31
  • Q3: July – September → due October 31
  • Q4: October – December → due January 31

If a due date falls on a weekend or legal holiday, your return is typically due the next business day. For the full schedule, see IFTA Reporting Periods and Due Dates.

New Mexico Taxes Beyond IFTA

Even fully IFTA-compliant fleets must file separate returns for New Mexico-specific road-use programs:

  • New Mexico Weight Distance Tax

These programs have their own thresholds, taxable-mileage definitions, and filing schedules. iFuelTax manages them in the same workflow as IFTA — see our Highway-Use & Weight-Distance Tax Software.
