Kentucky IFTA, IRP, and Fuel-Use Tax Guide (2026)

Kentucky is one of the few states that layers additional road-use taxes on top of IFTA. If your fleet is based in or runs through Kentucky, you need to handle both IFTA and Kentucky Weight Distance Tax (KYU) without doubling your workload. This guide covers the essentials.

Does Kentucky Participate in IFTA?

Yes. Kentucky is an IFTA member jurisdiction. If Kentucky is your base state, you file quarterly IFTA returns with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Division of Motor Carriers, reporting fuel use in all participating U.S. states and Canadian provinces. Official guidance is available from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Division of Motor Carriers.

Who Must Register for IFTA in Kentucky?

You generally must register for IFTA in Kentucky if you operate a qualified motor vehicle that:

  • Has two axles and a gross vehicle weight over 26,000 lbs, or
  • Has three or more axles regardless of weight, and
  • Travels in more than one IFTA member jurisdiction

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Division of Motor Carriers provides detailed criteria and registration instructions. Once registered, you receive an IFTA license and decals for each qualified vehicle.

Kentucky IFTA Reporting Periods and Due Dates

Kentucky follows the standard IFTA quarterly calendar:

  • Q1: January – March → due April 30
  • Q2: April – June → due July 31
  • Q3: July – September → due October 31
  • Q4: October – December → due January 31

If a due date falls on a weekend or legal holiday, your return is typically due the next business day. For the full schedule, see IFTA Reporting Periods and Due Dates.

Kentucky Taxes Beyond IFTA

Even fully IFTA-compliant fleets must file separate returns for Kentucky-specific road-use programs:

  • Kentucky Weight Distance Tax (KYU)

These programs have their own thresholds, taxable-mileage definitions, and filing schedules. iFuelTax manages them in the same workflow as IFTA — see our Highway-Use & Weight-Distance Tax Software.

How to File Kentucky IFTA Returns Online

Kentucky carriers can file IFTA returns electronically through the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Division of Motor Carriers's online systems. When you use iFuelTax, you can:

  • Generate a report that matches Kentucky's required fields
  • Use that report as the basis for your online filing
  • Keep a copy of the return and supporting records in one place

This reduces the risk of data-entry errors when moving between systems.
